Masonville Cove: Best Kept South Baltimore Secret

During my time as a digital news media manager for the Maryland Port Administration, I’ve had the opportunity to learn more about Baltimore in ways I haven’t before.

The biggest individual impact I’ve witnessed with kids and families is at the Masonville Cove Environmental Education Center. Located adjacent to the Masonville Marine Terminal where Mercedes-Benz cars line the lot, one of the best recreational spots in Baltimore is neatly tucked away on Frankfurst Avenue.

The land is owned by the Maryland Port Administration, but is a true partnership. Living Classrooms Foundation operates the classroom building hosting field trips from surrounding schools. The National Aquarium and Maryland Environmental Service also enhance educational and recreational opportunities on site for students and families, including hosting an annual BioBlitz. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service helps with wildlife education and protection as well as being an invaluable federal resource. The site was designated the nation’s first Urban Wildlife Refuge Partnership — a designation for properties that are not owned by the federal government but significant protected lands that are operated in cooperation with the USFWS.

And lest I forget, Masonville Cove is also the home of Captain Trash Wheel.

Here are various clips of my work about Masonville Cove:
