Thanks for checking out my online portfolio. Who am I?
My name is Charles Schelle, and I still think of myself a journalist in my role as a communications specialist/writer for Frostburg State University.
Some people thought my work was special enough to award me press association awards in Florida and Maryland as well as be recognized by Suburban Newspapers of America for my entertainment feature writing.
I like variety in coverage, so as you’ll see throughout my career I’ve focused on government in some stages, retail in others, sports tourism, theater and the arts, celebrity and pop culture and whatever interests me and the reader.
In my gig at Frostburg State University, I focus on feature writing, telling the stories of students and experiential education. That’s jargon for hands-on work in and outside of the classroom. Some of that is enhanced through video packages, too.
I grew up in Clear Spring, Md., outside of Hagerstown in Western Maryland. Earned degrees from Hagerstown Community College in 2004 and Ball State University in 2006.
I was a summer features intern for the Erie Times-News in 2006, then worked part time for The Journal in Martinsburg, W.Va., after I received my degree that year.
After that, I have traveled all across Western and Central Maryland for news with my roles at The Gazette (Frederick and Carroll counties), Patuxent Publishing/Baltimore Sun Media Group (Carroll, Howard and Baltimore counties with a story in Prince George’s County one time) and now FSU in Allegany County with stops in Garrett and Anne Arundel for features.
Between that was the Florida years. The commute from Hagerstown to Baltimore became to much and Patch recruited me at the right time in 2011. I moved to Sarasota, Fla., and lived there until 2015 between working for Patch and the Bradenton Herald in the neighboring county.
When I’m not working, I’m usually watching or playing hockey. I’m a diehard Caps fan and adopted the Tampa Bay Lightning while living in Florida. It’s OK. You understand that this is somewhat normal when living in the Sunshine State to adopt the local team while keeping your hometown allegience. The team played its way to the Stanley Cup Final, so I can’t just give up on them.
